Rwenzori Attacks: Police confirm multiple assaults, several suspects arrested

Fort Portal, Uganda: Police Spokesperson for the Rwenzori Region, ACP Rusoke Kituuma, has confirmed that coordinated attacks by unidentified assailants struck several security installations across the Rwenzori sub-region at dawn on Saturday, November 1, 2025.

According to ACP Kituuma, the simultaneous assaults targeted police facilities in both Rwenzori West and Rwenzori East, including districts of Bundibugyo, Bunyangabu, Kasese, and Fort Portal City.

“In Rwenzori West, the attacks were reported in Bundibugyo, particularly at Kakuka Parish in Sindira Sub-county, and in Fort Portal City, where an attempted attack on Nyakasura School and Canon Apollo Core PTC was foiled,” Kituuma told reporters.

He added that in Rwenzori East, the attackers struck Kasese District, targeting Kasese Police Barracks and Rwenzori Davara Police Station, in what security agencies believe were coordinated strikes by the same group.

“Several assailants have been put out of action and others arrested. More arrests are ongoing as our operations continue,” ACP Kituuma said, noting that police and joint security forces were still pursuing remnants of the attackers.

He, however, confirmed that police suffered some casualties during the attacks but withheld specific figures, citing ongoing operations. “We shall be providing accurate casualty figures and operational outcomes in due course, once the situation has fully stabilized.”

Kituuma emphasized that the joint security task force remains actively deployed across the region to restore calm and prevent further attacks. “We assure the public that the situation is under control, and security agencies are working around the clock to apprehend all those involved,” he said.

The Rwenzori region, which borders the Democratic Republic of Congo, has in recent years experienced isolated security incidents linked to armed groups operating in the mountainous terrain.
