Five arrested over kidnap and murder of girl, 6, after failed Shs50m ransom

Bugiri, Uganda: Police in Bugiri District have arrested five suspects in connection with the kidnap and murder of a six-year-old girl, identified as Taaka Loy, after failing to secure a ransom of Shs50 million from her caretaker.

According to Busoga East Police Spokesperson ASP Michael Kasadha, the suspects currently in custody include Waiswa Allan, Baliraine Geoffrey, Osogoli Umar, Mulondo Isaac, and a woman only identified as Phiona.

“Taaka Loy was kidnapped on November 1, 2025, at around 6:00 pm from Buwembula Village, Kayogera Parish, Muterere Sub County in Bugiri District,” ASP Kasadha said in a statement issued on Thursday evening.

Preliminary police findings indicate that shortly after the abduction, the suspects demanded a ransom of Shs50 million from the child’s caretaker, identified as Okello Moses alias Otori. Investigations have since revealed that the prime suspect, Waiswa Allan, is a nephew to the caretaker, making the case a chilling instance of betrayal within the family.

“The alleged kidnappers kept demanding for ransom until today when they were arrested in an intelligence-led operation. During interrogation, the prime suspect, Waiswa Allan, confessed to murdering the child and burying her behind his house in a potato garden,” Kasadha added.

A joint security team led by SSP Kyeyune Edrisa, the Regional Police Commander, visited the crime scene where the decomposing body of the minor was exhumed. Police said several exhibits of evidential value were recovered to aid ongoing investigations.

The body of the deceased was later conveyed to Bugiri Hospital Mortuary for postmortem examination, as detectives continue gathering further evidence.

ASP Kasadha strongly condemned the act, warning the public against criminal tendencies that endanger innocent lives. “We caution the public to desist from such acts of lawlessness. The suspects will face the full force of the law,” he emphasized.

By press time on Thursday afternoon, the suspects were still detained at Bugiri Central Police Station, pending prosecution on charges of kidnap and murder.
