Shock as man, 54, found murdered in Bugweri swamp

Bugweri, Uganda: Shock and grief gripped residents of Buwabe Village, Ibulanku Sub-county in Bugweri District on Saturday morning after the body of a 54-year-old man was found dumped in a swamp separating Buwabe and Butaba villages under unclear circumstances.

Local authorities said the victim, later identified as Matege Yusuf, a tractor driver and resident of Idudi Town Council, was likely murdered by unknown assailants before his body was abandoned in the swamp along the Buwabe–Butaba road.

The LC1 Chairperson of Butaba Village, Kyebambe Hassan, confirmed the discovery, saying he received a call from a resident, Balyejusa Nicholas, at around 6:50am reporting a body lying in the water channel.

“I got a call about the bad news early in the morning. We immediately alerted police after confirming that someone had been killed and dumped near the road,” Kyebambe said.

Locals Suspect Robbery, Signs of Struggle at Scene

Several locals, including Sheikh Matende Sadiq and Waiswa Hassan Baigwite, the councillor of Nsaale Parish, told DailyExpress that the scene showed signs of a violent struggle.

“I was heading to my garden when I saw the body. It appeared there had been a fight before the man was overpowered and killed,” Sheikh Sadiq said.

Pieces of broken motorcycle mirrors were found scattered near the body, suggesting that the deceased may have been attacked by robbers who made off with his motorcycle.

Police Launch Investigations

Busoga East Police Spokesperson ASP Michael Kasadha confirmed the incident, saying police visited the scene and began inquiries into the murder.

“The body was found lying in a water channel along the Butaba–Buwabe road. The GISO informed Bugweri CPS, and detectives responded immediately. However, the sniffer dog could not trace the killers because the scene had already been contaminated,” Kasadha said.

He added that initial findings indicate a scuffle occurred before the killing. The deceased had visible bruises on the face, and the evidence recovered at the scene points to possible robbery with violence.

“The crime scene had signs of struggle and the motorcycle mirrors were broken. We suspect the assailants attacked the deceased and took off with his motorcycle,” ASP Kasadha noted.

Police conveyed the body to Iganga General Hospital Mortuary for a postmortem examination, while exhibits recovered from the scene were recorded to aid ongoing investigations.

“We have mounted a manhunt for the suspects and will ensure they are brought to book,” Kasadha added.
