Luuka, Uganda: Police in Busoga North Region have launched investigations into a tragic incident in which a three-year-old boy, identified as Sali Hinda Jaiden, drowned in a water collection pit in Lukunhu A Cell, Busalamu Town Council, Luuka District.
According to preliminary police findings, the child was playing near his home on Saturday afternoon while a village SACCO meeting was being held in the family compound. When it began to rain, the adults reportedly rushed indoors, leaving the toddler unsupervised outside.
After the rain stopped, family members noticed the boy was missing and began searching the compound. Their search ended in heartbreak when his body was found submerged in a pit dug to collect water in a nearby coffee plantation.
DailyExpress understands that Busalamu Police Station has opened a death inquiry file to establish the full circumstances surrounding the drowning. Statements from family members and witnesses are being recorded to determine whether negligence contributed to the tragedy.
“The Police are investigating the matter to understand exactly how this unfortunate incident happened,” said SSP Samson Lubega, the Busoga North Regional Police Spokesperson. “We extend our condolences to the bereaved family and urge the public to remain vigilant when caring for young children.”
Police Caution Parents and Communities
Police have once again reminded parents and guardians to exercise maximum vigilance and constant supervision over children, especially during community meetings or adverse weather conditions.
“Open pits, trenches, and water collection points should always be fenced or covered to prevent such avoidable fatalities,” SSP Lubega said, emphasizing that community members must take collective responsibility to protect children from domestic and environmental hazards.
By press time on Monday morning, the body of the deceased had been handed over to the family for burial as investigations continue.
