Bukwo, Uganda: President Yoweri Museveni on Monday extended heartfelt condolences to the people of Bukwo District following the loss of lives and property in recent landslides, promising immediate and sustained government intervention to support affected families.

Speaking during his campaign rally at Amana Playgrounds in Bukwo District as he launched his Sebei Subregion campaign trail, the President said relief efforts were already underway and additional government support would soon follow to help displaced families recover.

“I extended condolences to the people of Bukwo for the lives lost in the recent landslide,” Museveni said. “I have already sent some support, and the government will do even more to help the affected families.”

“Use the Mountain Wisely” – Museveni

Addressing hundreds of residents who turned up for the rally, Museveni reflected on the changing human–environment relationship in the mountainous Sebei region, cautioning against unsafe settlement practices on steep slopes.

“In the past, when the population was small, the mountain was safe,” he said. “Now that more people have settled there, we must use it wisely. Agriculture alone is not the only way; tourism is another major opportunity.”

The President urged residents to look beyond subsistence farming and embrace tourism, environmental conservation, and enterprise development as sustainable ways of coexisting with the mountain.

“After the elections, we shall discuss a clear strategy for living with the mountain,” Museveni said, promising that his next government would implement targeted interventions to promote mountain tourism and safe settlement planning in Sebei and other highland districts.

NRM’s 40-Year Achievements

Museveni also used the Bukwo rally to remind voters of the seven key contributions of the National Resistance Movement (NRM) over the past four decades, emphasizing that peace and wealth creation remain the foundation of Uganda’s stability and progress.

“The first is peace, achieved through our ideology of patriotism and love for Uganda and Africa,” he said. “The second is development, including roads, electricity, telephones, piped water, and soon, the railway.”

He further highlighted that NRM’s focus on individual household prosperity is now being actualized through programs like NAADS, Operation Wealth Creation (OWC), and the Parish Development Model (PDM).

“We emphasize individual wealth creation. With programs like NAADS, OWC, and now PDM, every household should join the money economy,” he told the cheering crowd.

The President’s rally in Bukwo marked the official start of his campaign trail in the Sebei Subregion, following a highly attended rally in Mbale City, where he urged voters to prioritize peace, development, and jobs as pillars of Uganda’s future.

Museveni will Tuesday, November 11, hold two rallies in Kapchorwa and Kween, to conclude the Sebei trail before embarking on the Bukedi subregion tour.
