Tycoon Sudhir Ruparelia named best Honorary Consul General in Uganda

According to findings by Public Opinions International, Ruparelia’s performance was rated outstanding by Ugandans who praised him for enabling bilateral trade and creating employment opportunities for Ugandans in Nepal.

Kampala, Uganda: The Nepalese Honorary Consul General to Uganda, H.E. Dr Sudhir Ruparelia, has been voted the Best Honorary Consul General in Uganda following a three-month national survey recognizing his exceptional contribution to promoting trade, tourism, and investment between Uganda and Nepal.

According to findings by Public Opinions International, Ruparelia’s performance was rated outstanding by Ugandans who praised him for enabling bilateral trade and creating employment opportunities for Ugandans in Nepal.

Appointed in February 2020 by Nepal’s then-President Bidhya Devi Bhandari, Dr Ruparelia officially presented his credentials to Uganda’s former Minister of Foreign Affairs, Hon. Sam Kutesa, on March 17, 2020, marking the opening of Nepal’s first consulate in Uganda at Crane Chambers in Kampala.

Since assuming the diplomatic role, Dr Ruparelia has worked tirelessly to deepen economic and cultural ties between Uganda and Nepal, while also advancing educational opportunities for youth through scholarship initiatives connecting students from both nations.

In September 2025, he hosted a public celebration of Nepal’s Constitution Day in Kampala — an event that underscored his commitment to fostering cultural exchange and strengthening relations between the two countries.

Beyond his diplomatic work, Dr Ruparelia remains a towering figure in Uganda’s business landscape. As Chairman of the Ruparelia Group, his conglomerate spans real estate, education, hospitality, and insurance, owning over 200 properties across the country. Notable subsidiaries include Speke Group of Hotels, Crane Management Services, Victoria University, Kampala Parents School, Sanyu FM, and Premier Roses Limited.

His leadership has earned multiple honors, including being named a Certified Uganda Development Champion (2019) for contributions toward Uganda Vision 2040 and the UN Sustainable Development Goals. He also holds an Honorary Doctor of Laws in Business from Uganda Pentecostal University, awarded for his outstanding economic impact.

Born in Kabatoro, Kasese District, in western Uganda, Dr Ruparelia’s entrepreneurial journey began after returning from exile in the UK in 1985 with only US$25,000. He founded Crane Forex Bureau, Uganda’s first licensed forex bureau, and steadily built what would become one of East Africa’s most influential business empires.

With an estimated net worth of US$4 billion, Dr Ruparelia continues to champion Uganda’s socio-economic transformation, combining business leadership with diplomatic service. His induction into the 2025 Uganda Development Champions Journal further cements his legacy as a visionary leader driving development and international cooperation.
