RDC vows to arrest goons defacing candidates’ posters in Buyende

Buyende, Uganda: The Deputy Resident District Commissioner for Buyende District, Ms Naome Nakiwala, has issued a stern warning to groups involved in defacing campaign posters, describing their actions as criminal, provocative, and a direct attack on the integrity of the electoral process.

Speaking to the media at her office, Ms Nakiwala condemned what she called a rising trend of hired campaign brigades tearing down rival candidates’ posters at night, noting that some candidates deliberately sponsor these groups to frustrate their opponents.

“In Nabirumba Bugaya main road, posters of President Museveni and Hon. Moses Magogo were defaced, torn and pulled down by a group of goons hired by a rival candidate who, unfortunately, is also an NRM primaries loser,” Nakiwala said.

She warned that security agencies will begin arresting any individuals found vandalising campaign materials, adding that candidates invest heavily in designing and printing posters that should not be destroyed for political rivalry.

Traders at Nabirumba Trading Centre reported that members of “Team No Sleep”, loyal to a known political mobiliser identified as Uncle Dan, pulled down Magogo’s posters from electricity poles in an attempt to replace them with their preferred candidate’s materials. The move was resisted by community members, forcing the mission to fail.

Residents further complained that the individuals hired to erect posters often act with arrogance and impunity, forcing campaign materials onto shops, homes, and business premises without consent—only to later boast to candidates that the community has endorsed them.

Businessman Donald Kibaya cautioned against such behaviour, saying forcing posters onto private property is both disrespectful and intended to incite conflict. “Some of these goons bring and put up posters without even requesting, just to provoke you,” Kibaya said.

Nakiwala has directed local leaders and security personnel to remain vigilant and urged political actors to promote civility, respect, and peaceful competition as campaigns intensify.
