The financial boost from GIZ is expected to ease operational pressures on the beneficiary schools and support efforts to improve learning conditions for children in Getom Sub-county.

Katakwi, Uganda: The German Federal Agency for International Cooperation (GIZ) has extended financial support to government-aided primary schools in Getom Sub-county, providing each school with Shs 500,000 to strengthen their day-to-day operations and planned development programmes.

The funds were delivered on Wednesday, November 13, 2025, by Ms Rose Amongin, the GIZ Coordinator for Teso Sub-region. She explained that the donation follows a formal request from School Management Committees (SMCs) seeking assistance to improve functionality and meet pressing operational needs.

Amongin said the beneficiary schools include Angorom Community Primary School, Abela Primary School, Getom Primary School, and Abwanget Primary School.

Speaking during the handover, community leader William Alloch Akol applauded residents for their commitment to education and urged them to ensure the funds are put to the intended use. “Let us own this project and use the money wisely so that our schools can improve,” Akol said.

Katakwi District LCV Chairperson Hon. Geoffrey Omolo also hailed GIZ for the timely intervention, noting that such support is crucial for rural schools facing financial challenges. He warned SMCs against mismanagement and announced that the district will form a supervisory team to monitor utilisation of the funds. “These funds must be spent exactly as budgeted, not for personal benefit,” Omolo emphasised.

He further revealed that Katakwi District has 27 un-coded schools, but only three currently qualify for support under similar development programmes — Angorom Community, Olupe, and Omosingo Primary Schools.

Education Leaders Call for Accountability and Community Support

District Secretary for Education and Public Service Irene Among thanked GIZ for its continued dedication to education in Katakwi, urging beneficiary schools to plan carefully and maximise the opportunity. “You are the blessed schools in the district, let us not waste this chance,” she said.

District Councillor for Persons With Disabilities Hon. Jude Alongu reminded parents to support the education of all children, without discrimination, insisting that every child deserves equal love and opportunity.

Getom Sub-county LCIII Chairperson David Eilor Kadongo warned parents against absenteeism and urged them to prioritise education over unproductive activities.

He cautioned holidaymakers to “desist from night dancing and invest their time in productive activities that support economic growth.”

Parish Councillor Stephen Malinga thanked both the community and GIZ for the partnership, saying the project must be treasured for the benefit of future generations.

Alfred Ochen, SMC Chairperson and village LCI, thanked GIZ for the significant contribution toward improving school operations. He encouraged parents to fulfil their remaining financial obligations to ensure smooth daily running of the community schools.

The financial boost from GIZ is expected to ease operational pressures on the beneficiary schools and support efforts to improve learning conditions for children in Getom Sub-county.
