Kapelebyong, Uganda: Kapelebyong District has launched the rehabilitation of two major roads in a deliberate move to improve connectivity, strengthen service delivery and stimulate wealth creation across the region in the 2025/2026 financial year, just days after President Museveni visited the area during his campaign trail in the Teso subregion.
The Shs443 million initiative follows years of heavy rains that left several community access roads damaged, affecting trade, transport and access to social services.
According to district authorities, the roads under construction include the Obalanga–Oditel Road (16km) funded with Shs208 million, and the Obalanga–Amare–Ocongoda Road (15km) funded with Shs235 million.
Speaking during the commissioning ceremony at Obalanga Town Council, Assistant Resident District Commissioner (RDC) Mr Ojomi Augustine assured residents of strict supervision to ensure value for money. He described the project as a clear sign of government’s ongoing commitment to developing infrastructure in Kapelebyong.
“Let us continue supporting leaders who prioritise the district’s development, including President Museveni. Avoid those who want to misuse district resources,” Mr Ojomi urged.
Representing the District Chairperson, Works and Technical Services Chairperson Mr Ojok Benedict called on residents to cooperate with the technical teams and refrain from disrupting construction activities.
“Please allow reinforcement structures to be installed properly and avoid stealing murrum, because it undermines the durability of these roads,” he cautioned.
On behalf of the Chief Administrative Officer, Ms Oroma Rhoda, District Planner Mr Peter Alobai appealed to residents to take responsibility for the new infrastructure by reporting any acts of vandalism.
“Kapelebyong generates about Shs400 million in local revenue annually. The government’s significant investment in these roads demonstrates its strong commitment to our district’s development,” Mr Alobai noted.
Acting District Engineer Mr Oule Charles said the two roads were selected by the district council for funding under the Shs1 billion mechanised road maintenance grant.
He added that construction costs remain high due to the district’s limited road equipment, forcing them to hire additional machinery.
Other roads lined up for this financial year include: Akulonyo–Acinga (11km) – Shs132 million, Acowa–Angerepo (16km) – Shs192 million, Alito Primary School–Alito Seed Secondary School (4km) – Shs84 million.
