Kampala, Uganda: Former head of the State House Anti-Corruption Unit, Col. Edith Nakalema, has praised students and faculty at Victoria University Kampala (VUK) for what she described as an exceptional level of openness, curiosity and willingness to engage in critical conversations about Uganda’s future.
Nakalema delivered the remarks on Monday following an interactive session at the university, saying she was encouraged by the depth of dialogue and the students’ readiness to interrogate issues of nationhood, values and individual responsibility.
She reminded the learners that patriotism must go beyond emotional attachment, emphasising that it demands ethical discipline, personal courage and deliberate contribution to national stability and prosperity.
“Every assignment completed with diligence, every innovation pursued with purpose, and every act of accountability strengthens our national fabric,” she said.

Nakalema underscored the importance of diligence, innovation and integrity among the youth, noting that each responsible action by young Ugandans reinforces the country’s social and moral foundation.
She extended appreciation to the university’s leadership, Vice Chancellor Prof. Lawrence Muganga, Deputy Vice Chancellor Prof. Augustine Ifelebuegu, Dr Shamim Matovu, and Guild President H.E. Emmanuel Khaukha, for fostering an environment that nurtures reflective, grounded and responsible young leaders.
Nakalema noted that national transformation begins in spaces like universities, where young people are prepared, challenged and empowered to serve.
