Kisoro health boss Stephen Nsabiyumva dead

Kisoro DHO Dr Stephen Nsabiyumva, is remembered for his hands-on leadership and strong contribution to the district’s health sector.

Kisoro, Uganda: The Kisoro District Health Officer (DHO), Dr Stephen Nsabiyumva, has died after battling severe kidney and liver complications for nearly two months, the district administration confirmed on Sunday night.

Chief Administrative Officer John Nyakahuma said the senior medic passed away at 10pm at Mengo Hospital, describing him as a quiet, knowledgeable and deeply committed professional who dedicated his life to improving health services in Kisoro.

“He was a wonderful, quiet, knowledgeable and passionate leader dedicated to improving the district’s health status,” Nyakahuma said, noting that the district will work with the family to organise a dignified burial.

Kisoro LCV Chairperson Abel Bizimana, who worked under Dr Nsabiyumva a decade ago as the District Health Educator, described him as a resourceful, disciplined and exemplary health leader.

He credited the late DHO for spearheading the district’s highly successful COVID-19 vaccination campaign, which achieved over 80% coverage of the target population. He also thanked the Mengo Hospital team for their “valiant efforts” to save his life.

LCV Councillor for Nyarusiza Sub-County, Johns Mfitumukiza, remembered Dr Nsabiyumva as a hands-on field health officer who frequently visited communities, identified gaps and pushed for practical solutions.

“He was a hands-on officer who reached out to communities and championed the staffing of health facilities to bring services closer to the people,” Mfitumukiza said, noting the shock that hit the district so soon after the death of former Minister and Kisoro Woman MP Sarah Nyirabashitsi Mateke.

Nyakinama Sub-County councillor Emmanuel Ndayisaba also mourned the DHO as a “listening leader” who treated concerns raised by health workers and locals with respect and urgency.
