Museveni appoints Badru Kiggundu new Busitema University Chancellor

Eng. Dr Badru M. Kiggundu, newly appointed as Busitema University’s 3rd Chancellor, will be installed on November 28 during the 16th Graduation Ceremony.

Busitema, Uganda: President Yoweri Museveni has appointed Eng. Dr Badru M. Kiggundu as the 3rd Chancellor of Busitema University, replacing Prof Vinand Mutakabala Nantulya, whose term officially ends this month.

The appointment was confirmed by Dr Charles Muweesi, Director of the Directorate of Institutional Advancement, who revealed that Dr Kiggundu emerged successful from three nominees forwarded by the University Council after the 71st Senate sitting.

According to Dr Muweesi, Dr Kiggundu will be installed on 28 November 2025 at the Busitema University Main Campus, where he will also preside over the 16th Graduation Ceremony, his first official assignment as Chancellor.

Dr Muweesi described the Chancellor’s role as “titular,” a term that reflects the legal framework that positions the Chancellor at the apex of university protocol.

He said the new Chancellor assumes office at a critical moment when Busitema’s strategic direction is firmly taking shape under Vice Chancellor Prof Paul Waako, who is spearheading growth in teaching, research, innovation and community service.

Dr Muweesi expressed confidence that Dr Kiggundu’s academic background, engineering expertise and vast experience in public-sector management will strengthen Busitema’s rising national profile. “The university is in the limelight, especially with the latest ranking where we placed number five,” he said, adding that Dr Kiggundu’s tenure is expected to accelerate growth in the institution’s core academic and research pillars.

In the run-up to the graduation, DailyExpress has learnt that over 1,500 students will be awarded degrees and diplomas across various disciplines. Dr Muweesi said a major milestone at this function will be the release of Busitema University’s first-ever PhD graduates, marking a new chapter in the institution’s academic evolution.

“We have been running PhD programmes for years but had never graduated any since their clearance by the National Council. This time we are releasing two,” Dr Muweesi noted.

As Chancellor, Dr Kiggundu will chair major university ceremonies, offer strategic guidance, support the University Council, and champion Busitema’s mission to expand its science, engineering and innovation footprint regionally and nationally.
