Kaliro gets major infrastructure boost as Museveni unveils district priorities

Kaliro, Uganda: The NRM presidential flag bearer and Party’s National Chairman, H.E. Yoweri Kaguta Museveni, Tuesday pledged to tackle key service delivery gaps in Kaliro District, including water access, roads, health facilities and electricity expansion, as he unveiled his campaign priorities at a rally in Bulumba on Tuesday.

Residents, led by Hon. Ggagawala Wambuzi, the district NRM chairperson and former area MP, presented a list of urgent demands, including extending water to drought-hit communities, rehabilitating major roads and upgrading health facilities.

Wambuzi told the President that the district’s 11 sub-counties and four town councils continue to grapple with service delivery challenges.

“We request you to extend water to the people and improve the road sector. We need a general hospital and some sub-counties lack health centres,” Wambuzi said. He cited specific gaps in Nawaikoke, Namwiwa and Bulumba sub-counties, and asked government to upgrade Nawaikoke Health Centre III to Health Centre IV.

He also appealed for a government-backed industrial project to revive the old ginnery and establish a textile-related factory to boost job creation, but thanked the President for constructing the Saaka Bridge, which now links Kaliro to neighbouring districts.

In response, Museveni promised a major infrastructure push for Kaliro, starting with the tarmacking of two key road corridors: Kamuli–Kagulu–Iyingo–Irundu–Kaliro (90km) and the Kamuli–Kaliro–Namwiwa–Buyuge–Pallisa Road.

“These are the roads we are going to tarmac in the next term,” Museveni said, while also committing to extend electricity to areas still off the grid.

On health infrastructure, the President noted that out of the district’s 15 sub-counties, only one has a Health Centre IV, nine have Health Centre IIIs, and five have no health facility at all. He promised that Kaliro Health Centre II will be upgraded to Health Centre III, while several Health Centre IIIs will be constructed in Bulumba, Nansololo, Namwiwa and Nawaikoke.

Museveni also pledged to build seed secondary schools in the seven sub-counties without government secondary schools, aligning with NRM’s policy of ensuring one government secondary school per sub-county and one primary school per parish.

“On education, Kaliro has 87 parishes and 89 government primary schools, and 9 government secondary schools; four seed schools are already under construction,” he noted.

The President reiterated the four-acre model as the foundation for household wealth, emphasizing peace, development, wealth creation and job creation as the NRM’s core achievements. He also promised to check on the Prince of Bulamogi Chiefdom, son of the late Kyabazinga Henry Wako Muloki, who was reported unwell.

At the same rally, First Deputy Prime Minister and Minister for East African Affairs Rebecca Kadaga hailed the people of Kaliro for voting overwhelmingly for NRM in 2021. She requested the establishment of a cement factory, noting the abundance of stone in the district that could serve as raw material.

NRM First National Vice Chairman Al-hajj Moses Kigongo urged Busoga leaders to unite, avoid internal conflict and maintain the peace ushered in by the NRM, saying unity would guarantee a landslide victory in the region.
