Katakwi LC5 Boss receives brand-new pickup to boost oversight of PDM, Emyooga

Katakwi RDC Stephen Okure hands over a new Mitsubishi pickup to District Chairperson Geoffrey Omolo to support monitoring of key government programmes.

Katakwi, Uganda: The government has delivered a brand-new Mitsubishi pickup to the Katakwi District Chairperson to strengthen local government supervision and improve oversight of critical development programmes across the district.

The vehicle, handed over on Thursday at the district headquarters, is part of a nationwide intervention to enhance service delivery by equipping district leaders with the tools needed to effectively monitor government initiatives, including PDM, Emyooga, and the Youth Livelihood Programme.

Katakwi LC5 Chairperson Geoffrey Omolo applauded the Ministry of Local Government for the vehicle, saying it will significantly ease his office’s day-to-day operations, particularly in the hard-to-reach areas of the vast district.

“Katakwi is one of the largest and most difficult districts to access. This vehicle will improve our mobility, but we still need more support, especially increased funding and road rehabilitation,” Omolo said.

Omolo added that the current government funding framework for local governments needs urgent review to match the growing service delivery demands on the ground.

Acting Chief Administrative Officer Samuel Becker Opio welcomed the intervention, noting that the LC5 chairperson had long been sharing vehicles with other departments, which hampered timely supervision of projects.

“This is a major boost for Katakwi. Transport challenges have been affecting our performance. This pickup will help the chairman fulfil his obligations more effectively,” Opio said, while urging responsible use and proper maintenance to avoid wastage of government assets.

The vehicle, registration UG 3400 0160, was formally received from Ministry of Local Government officials and handed to the district leadership by Resident District Commissioner Stephen Okure Ilemukorit.

While presiding over the handover, Ilemukorit emphasized that the pickup must be used strictly for government work.

“This car is meant to ease mobilisation and monitoring of government programmes. Drivers and officers should use it responsibly, not for personal errands,” he warned.
