Police rescue 15 youth defrauded in fake job scam, three suspects arrested

Some of the victims rescued from a fake job recruitment scheme in Bison ‘A’ Cell.

Tororo, Uganda: Police in Tororo have rescued 15 young men and women who were lured from their home districts with false promises of high-paying jobs and held for up to three months while being defrauded of millions of shillings.

The victims, mainly from the Teso sub-region, were tricked into believing they would be employed by a fictitious company named “Rock Star Millionaires Team.”

The operation began on November 19, 2025, at around 12:03 pm, when Sgt Omego Francis, the Officer Commanding Western Division Police Station, responded to a tip-off at Muzuri Guest House in Bison ‘A’ Cell, Tororo Municipality.

Three distressed victims, Omoding Gabriel, Opolot Tom Francis (both from Kapelebyong), and Okoli Emmanuel (from Amuria), approached Sgt Omego, reporting they had been extorted between Shs150,000 and Shs1.8 million as “facilitation fees” for jobs that never existed.

They guided police to a rented house in Bison ‘A’ Cell, where the remaining 12 victims were found waiting for the promised employment.

Police responded by arresting three suspects identified as Odiope Andrew (Kapelebyong), Engicu Samuel (Amuria) and Acori Michael (Katakwi), all of whom were residing in Bison Cell and described themselves as self-employed Itesot.

During the operation, officers recovered Shs1 million, believed to be part of the money collected from the victims. “These victims were brought to Tororo since August 2025 and have been here for about three months without any job,” said IP Mugwe J. Moses, Regional Police Spokesperson for Bukedi South.

He said the suspects collected money under the guise of securing jobs with the non-existent company. All the rescued victims are currently at Tororo Central Police Station, receiving psychosocial support.

The three suspects remain in custody as investigations continue, but police have warned job seekers to be vigilant against fraudsters posing as recruitment agents. “We want to appeal to our people to be very careful with masqueraders who claim to provide job opportunities yet their intentions are different,” IP Mugwe said.
