Katakwi, Uganda: The Vice President of Uganda, H.E. Maj (Rtd) Jessica Rose Epel Alupo, has commended farmers across the country for their resilience and contribution to Uganda’s economic progress despite ongoing price fluctuations affecting key agricultural products.

The Vice President, who also serves as the Woman MP for Katakwi District, made the remarks on Wednesday, November 11, 2025, during the burial of the late Soropina Atim, a 93-year-old mother to retired Toroma Boys headteacher, at Agule Village in Toroma Sub-county.

Alupo praised the late Atim Soropina, fondly remembered as “Toto Atim”, for her lifelong commitment to farming and her love for education, noting that her legacy remains an inspiration to the people of Toroma and Katakwi at large.

“We learnt a lot from her since 1963 when my father, the late Epel, was Headteacher of Toroma Boys. Let’s emulate her deeds,” Alupo told mourners.

She further urged residents of Agule and the wider Toroma area to embrace the government-established irrigation system for production, stressing that communities must “own the project” to maximise its economic benefits.

Ms Alupo also called upon political candidates in Katakwi to uphold democratic values and support multiparty politics. She invited her political opponent’s representative at the event, emphasising unity, tolerance, and respect in the district’s political landscape.

The Vice President reassured residents of the government’s ongoing service delivery efforts and highlighted key priorities, including road rehabilitation, establishment of a Technical School, and upgrading Health Centres to HC IV status.

She reiterated her focus on poverty eradication and household economic empowerment, especially through youth and women-driven programs.

Toroma County MP Joseph Andrew Koluo applauded the late Atim for her role in shaping community knowledge and advised voters to scrutinize manifestos before electing leaders.

Usuk County MP and Teso Parliamentary Group Chairperson Hon. Bosco Okiror rallied residents to vote President Museveni and VP Alupo “100%” come 2026, urging them to elect leaders who are development-oriented rather than self-motivated.

Former CA Member Wilfred Adio cautioned against propaganda-driven politics, while Deputy RDC Vincent Xavier Okwi called on residents to safeguard government gains such as PDM, Emyooga, and the irrigation program to strengthen household incomes. He also appealed for peaceful elections in 2026.

Katakwi LCV Chairperson Geoffrey Omolo revealed that the Ministry of Works and Transport will soon rehabilitate three roads in Toroma County and seven others districtwide.

NRM District Chairperson Robert Clare Okiror encouraged continued unity within the ruling party, reaffirming efforts to mobilize massive support for President Museveni, Vice President Alupo, and other NRM leaders ahead of the 2026 elections.
