BRAC unveils livelihood cost-sharing approach to empower Kiryandongo women

Kiryandongo Deputy CAO Deo Kabugo addressing stakeholders during the BRAC AIM program meeting at the District Headquarters.

Kiryandongo, Uganda: BRAC Uganda has unveiled a groundbreaking cost-sharing model under the Accelerating Impact for Young Women (AIM) program, introducing a new approach to livelihood support aimed at strengthening ownership and sustainability among adolescent girls in Kiryandongo District.

The initiative, funded by the Mastercard Foundation, will require participants to contribute a portion of the value of the productive assets they receive. A share of each asset package will be issued as an advance, which beneficiaries will repay through flexible, small fixed installments collected twice a month over 12 months. The first month after receiving the asset will serve as a grace period.

BRAC says the model is intended to reinforce responsibility, promote enterprise discipline among young women, and create a self-sustaining funding cycle, as all repayments will be reinvested into the program. Participants will repay no more than 30% of the total value of the support received, depending on the nature of their enterprise.

Speaking during a stakeholder meeting at the Kiryandongo District Headquarters, Deputy Chief Administrative Officer (CAO) Deo Kabugo praised BRAC for its close collaboration with district leadership and noted that the district is confronting challenges such as teenage pregnancies.

He said BRAC’s livelihood interventions are already transforming the lives of adolescent girls and reaffirmed the district’s commitment to supporting the AIM program.

Assistant Resident District Commissioner (RDC) Inasuku Natacha Gloria commended the strong coordination between political and technical leaders in the district, saying this teamwork has boosted the implementation of government programs.

She pledged ongoing support from the District Security Committee and encouraged BRAC to work closely with GISOs to ensure smooth program rollout.

BRAC says the new model, supported by effective local partnerships, is expected to foster long-term empowerment and economic resilience for young women across Kiryandongo.
