Parental Care pupils off to Rwanda for Pan-African debate contest

Bushenyi Parental Care School pupils departed for Kigali on Friday where they will take part in the Pan-African Junior Schools Debate Championship.

Bushenyi, Uganda: A team of pupils from Parental Care Nursery and Primary School in Bushenyi, Friday departed for Kigali, Rwanda, to represent Uganda at this year’s Pan-African Junior Schools Debate Championship.

The three-day continental competition, which kicked off on 21st November, has attracted more than 100 schools across Africa, offering young debaters a stage to demonstrate public speaking, critical thinking and teamwork skills.

Flagging off the delegation at Tuzza Hotel in Bushenyi Town, District Speaker Douglas Mucunguzi commended the school for its continued excellence in academics and co-curricular activities.

“Parental Care School continues to lift the district’s flag high through strong PLE results and active participation in national and international competitions. We are proud of these young ambassadors,” Mucunguzi said.

Parent representative Apollo Lee Kakonge encouraged the pupils to aim beyond participation. “You are going not just to participate but to win. Carry discipline, confidence and commitment, you have all it takes to return home as champions,” he said.

Headteacher Desmond Tayebwa emphasised the value of debate in shaping learners. “Debate builds confidence, self-esteem and critical thinking, all key to academic success. We are confident our team will excel,” Tayebwa said.

Parental Care Nursery and Primary School will also represent Uganda at next year’s Africa Spelling Bee in Zimbabwe after emerging overall national winners in the Enjuba Spelling Bee held at Serena Hotel, Kampala. They will represent Uganda alongside Tororo Parents School and Pax Junior School.

Arinaitwe Leah, one of the debaters, said she was excited to represent Uganda and hoped to make her school and district proud.

Parental Care School remains one of the top-performing institutions in both academics and co-curricular activities, maintaining a strong culture of excellence over the years.
