Kibuku, Uganda: A motorcyclist identified as Kakonge Fred was killed instantly on Monday morning after making a sudden turn in the path of an overtaking vehicle along the Tirinyi–Iganga Highway in Kadama Town Council, Kibuku District.
According to a police report filed at Kibuku Police Station, the 07:07 AM crash occurred when Kakonge, a resident of Kaluja Parish in neighbouring Butebo District, abruptly turned right without giving any signal as he rode a Mate motorcycle registration number UDR 710L.
A Toyota Wish, registration UBP 882J, driven by retired Lt Col Ochom James from Bukedea District, was overtaking at the time and crashed into the motorcycle before veering off the road into a nearby maize garden.
Sgt Wasalaine Tom, the first responder attached to Kibuku CPS, confirmed that the rider died on the spot due to multiple injuries sustained in the collision.
Police attributed the fatal crash to reckless riding and failure to indicate before turning. The wreckage of both the motorcycle and the Toyota Wish was towed to Tirinyi Police Station for further inspection by the Inspector of Vehicles (IOV).
The body of Kakonge Fred was later transferred to Kibuku Health Centre IV mortuary for postmortem examination.
Bukedi North Regional Police spokesperson ASP Kyempasa Wilfred urged motorcyclists to prioritise road discipline and always signal before turning, stressing that “a simple indicator could have saved a life.”
