Mukono, Uganda: Police have confirmed that the body recovered from Musaale Swamp in Kyampisi Sub-county belongs to 15-year-old Melisa Aneza, a student of Naalya Secondary School, Lugazi, after DNA results matched perfectly with her parents’ samples.
According to Kampala Metropolitan Police Deputy Spokesperson Luke Owoyesigyire, the Police Forensic Laboratory released the DNA report last Friday, prompting pathologists at Mulago National Referral Hospital to hand over the body to the family for burial arrangements.
Owoyesigyire said the parents formally received the body from City Mortuary Mulago and proceeded with the funeral rites. The family held the final vigil and service in Makerere-Kikoni before burying Aneza at their ancestral home in Kabuga, Kanungu District, on Saturday.
Police maintain that an active investigation is underway to identify those behind her killing, establish the motive, and ensure they are brought before court.
The teenager went missing on November 4, with her disappearance reported on November 6. Her body was discovered a week later on November 11 in Musaale Swamp, Namulaba Village, Kyampisi Sub-county, after photos of an unidentified body had earlier circulated on social media.
Witnesses told police that the body was found dressed in a navy-blue student skirt labelled Nanyonga VII, indicating she was a student.
The parents later said they first identified the body through a photo shared online by Kayunga local authorities, but police initially blocked them from accessing the scene and asked them to return the following day.
By the time they returned on November 12, the body had already been buried. Authorities later exhumed it for a postmortem examination and DNA analysis, which has now confirmed the identity beyond doubt.
