Gunmen kill police officer in Mukono, take off with AK-47 riffle in ‘targeted attack’

RiP: ASP Bagenda Emmanuel, the OC of Ntawo Police Post in Mukono District was shot dead after armed robbers opened fire on police officers during a late-night pursuit.

Mukono, Uganda: The Territorial Police in Mukono District is investigating the circumstances under which ASP Bagenda Emmanuel, the Officer in Charge of Ntawo Police Post, was shot dead on Sunday night after gunmen opened fire on police personnel responding to an armed-robbery alert in Ntawo Cell, Mukono Central Division.

The attackers later escaped with an AK-47 rifle, police confirmed Monday.

Police said the 10:25 PM attack occurred as ASP Bagenda and his unidentified colleague, a police constable, followed up on a reported armed robbery in Kiwala Village.

“On the night of November 23, 2025, around 10:25 PM, a murder incident occurred in Ntawo cell, Mukono Central Division, Mukono municipality. ASP Bagenda Emmanuel, Officer in Charge of Ntawo Police Post, along with a police constable, pursued suspected armed robbers following a report of armed robbery in Kiwala village,” reads in part a police statement issued on the incident.

During the response, the officers intercepted a suspicious motorcycle whose occupants immediately opened fire, fatally wounding ASP Bagenda and seriously injuring the constable, who is currently hospitalised.

“When they attempted to stop a suspicious motorcycle, the occupants opened fire, fatally wounding ASP Bagenda Emmanuel. The police constable was also injured but survived and was transferred to the hospital.”

The gunmen fled with the officers’ AK-47 rifle, escalating security concerns in a district that has, in recent years, recorded high levels of homicide, break-ins, and armed attacks. Mukono District previously ranked among the country’s top hotspots for violent crime, according to national crime data.

According to Annet Mutesi, an eyewitness, “the OC was shot four times. He tried to take off after being shot once, and they ran after him and shot again, just like 150 metres from the police post.”

Police have launched an intensive manhunt for the suspects, describing the murder of a senior officer and theft of a service rifle as a grave security breach requiring swift intervention. “Uganda Police Force is pursuing the assailants, who will be brought to justice once apprehended,” the police emphasized
