Adjumani, Uganda: A night of escalating political tension on Sunday left one woman assaulted, two motorcycles impounded, and property stolen as supporters of rival LC5 candidates clashed in Adjumani District, police have confirmed.
The violence unfolded in Mbere Village and later outside Radio Aulogo in Adjumani Town, involving supporters of NRM flag-bearer Anyanzo John and incumbent Independent candidate Anyama Ben.
North West Nile Regional Police Spokesperson SP Collins Asea said supporters allied to Anyama Ben allegedly attacked NRM supporter Morika Agness as she returned from a campaign rally. The attackers reportedly pulled her off her motorcycle, registration UFJ 784T, and stole her mobile phone valued at UGX 500,000.
In what police suspect was retaliation, groups of supporters of Anyanzo John later mobilized and camped outside Radio Aulogo, planning to confront Anyama Ben as he concluded a political radio programme.
A prompt police intervention led by the District Police Commander (DPC) prevented a direct clash, with officers dispersing the NRM group after they issued an apology.
One suspect, Edema James Apiko, has been arrested in connection with the attack, with a robbery case opened under SD REF 47/23/11/2025. Two motorcycles, UAW 970X and UFJ 784T, were recovered and returned to their owners.
Police later escorted candidate Anyama Ben to his residence and deployed two officers to guard his home overnight.
SP Asea urged all candidates in the Madi Sub-region to restrain their supporters, saying: “Elections are not a matter of life and death. Violence will not be tolerated.”
Security patrols have been intensified in Adjumani Town. Police say calm has been restored, but investigations remain ongoing.
