Katakwi kicks off construction of Shs500m modern theatre, UPDF pledges quality, timely delivery

Katakwi, Uganda: Katakwi District has launched the construction of a Shs500 million modern surgical theatre at Toroma Health Centre IV, a project officials say will significantly boost surgical and emergency healthcare services in the district.

The facility, located in Toroma Town Council, will be constructed by the UPDF Engineering Brigade, under a Ministry of Health initiative to upgrade critical health infrastructure across the country.

District Health Officer Simon Omeke Icumar said the long-awaited theatre will transform service delivery, especially in maternal health, emergency surgery and specialist care.

“The facility comes with four essential rooms, a surgery room, nurses’ resting room, patient resting room and a waiting area for attendants. It will greatly ease the workload and improve response to emergencies,” Icumar said.

He urged the community to monitor the project and ensure quality delivery. “We ask UPDF to recruit qualified people from the area to support the work and deliver quality output,” he added.

UPDF Pledges Quality and Timely Delivery

Eastern Uganda UPDF Engineering Brigade in charge, Captain Noah Opio, said the unit has constructed more than 10 modern theatres since he assumed the role and promised that Toroma’s facility will match national standards.

“This will be one of the best theatres. We are committed to timely, efficient and quality work,” he said.

Acting CAO Samuel Berkley Opio said Katakwi has made significant progress in infrastructure delivery compared to previous financial years and asked the UPDF to submit its bill of quantities for proper monitoring.

LCV Chairperson George Omolo applauded the Ministry of Health for prioritising Toroma, saying the district urgently needs expanded surgical services. He also rallied residents to support President Yoweri Museveni and Vice President Jessica Alupo in the forthcoming elections.

Toroma County MP Andrew Koluo urged residents to safeguard the project and maintain peace during elections. “This is your project — own it, protect it, and let us have free and fair elections,” he said.

District RDC Stephen Okure Ilemukorit, representing Vice President Alupo at the launch, praised government for expanding health and infrastructure projects in Katakwi. “The theatre reflects government’s commitment to improving healthcare across the country,” he said, urging residents to embrace health services such as polio vaccination and maternal care.

He also appealed for zero tolerance to corruption during the implementation of the project.
