Be job creators not seekers, Museveni tells graduates

Vice President Jessica Alupo arrives to represent President Museveni at Kumi University’s 20th graduation ceremony on Friday, November 28, 2025.

Kumi, Uganda: President Yoweri Kaguta Museveni has urged university students across the country to shift from the mindset of job-seeking to job creation, saying Uganda’s future growth depends on graduates who use their training to innovate, build enterprises and drive community development.

The President delivered the message through Vice President Jessica Alupo during the 20th graduation ceremony of Kumi University on Friday, where 1,578 students, 813 females and 765 males received degrees and diplomas in education, languages, social sciences, management, science and technology.

Museveni said graduates must apply their academic knowledge to real-world solutions, particularly in agriculture, science and technology. “I encourage you, graduands, to approach the future not as job seekers but as job creators by using the acquired knowledge and skills to innovate and start enterprises,” he said.

The President reaffirmed government’s commitment to strengthening the education sector through expanded digital infrastructure, research support and youth entrepreneurship programmes.

Mr Museveni encouraged universities to work more closely with government, communities and the private sector to turn academic training into practical national progress. “Wherever you go, into classrooms, farms, laboratories, offices or your own businesses, go with confidence and the commitment to contribute to the development of Uganda,” he said.

Museveni hailed Kumi University’s 20-year milestone as a demonstration of its role in expanding higher education in eastern Uganda and producing professionals in education, business, agriculture, ICT and other critical fields.

He urged the institution to uphold academic integrity, strengthen research and ensure its graduates remain globally competitive.

Kumi University Chancellor Dr. Sung Joo Hwang shares a light moment with VP Alupo at the institution’s 20-year milestone celebration.

The university’s Chancellor, Dr Sung Joo Hwang, congratulated the graduands for persevering through disruptions in recent years. “Today marks the culmination of your hard work, resilience and determination,” he said.

Vice Chancellor Prof. Jong-In Hong encouraged graduates to pursue lives of service. “We are not meant to live just for ourselves, but to be a blessing to the people around us,” he said.

Museveni reiterated that Uganda now needs graduates who are not only knowledgeable but also creative, solution-oriented and ready to respond to emerging global demands.
