Lira City, Uganda: Lango Diocese on Sunday ordained 29 new clergy in a grand service at Boroboro Cathedral, but the celebration came with a stern warning from Bishop Prof Dr Alfred Olwa, who cautioned the fresh ordinands against lawlessness, arrogance and the misuse of pastoral authority.

The 22 priests and seven deacons, drawn from various archdeaconries, were commissioned before hundreds of Christians who flocked to the cathedral precincts for one of the largest ordination ceremonies witnessed in recent years.

But as the clergy knelt for the laying on of hands, Prof Olwa reminded them that ministry demands strict adherence to church order and personal discipline.

“Ministry is holy work. If you cannot submit to the law of the church, you cannot shepherd God’s people,” he said. “A clerical collar is not a badge of privilege; it is a reminder that you must die to self and live for Christ.”

The Bishop’s caution comes at a time when the Church of Uganda has been grappling with cases of misconduct, mismanagement of resources and growing concerns about pastoral integrity. Without naming any incidents, Prof Olwa warned that Lango Diocese will not tolerate clergy who undermine church canons or abuse their office.

“We cannot build God’s church on indiscipline. Follow the law, uphold the canons, and resist the temptation to exploit the flock,” he said.

Prof Olwa also appealed to Christians to support the new clergy, saying some parish conflicts are sparked by laity with personal or political motives. “Christians, pray for your clergy and work with them. Do not sabotage their ministry,” he urged.

Many worshippers welcomed the new ordinations, describing them as a strong step in strengthening parish leadership, evangelism and community transformation. The clergy are expected to receive their deployment letters in the coming weeks.
