Two juveniles killed as speeding Isuzu truck knocks cyclist in Luuka

Luuka District, Uganda: Police in Luuka are investigating a fatal road crash that claimed the lives of two juveniles after a speeding Isuzu Elf truck knocked a pedal cyclist at Kasozi Village along the Ikonia–Nawampiti road on Wednesday morning.

The accident, which occurred at around 10:00 am involved an Isuzu Elf blue in colour, registration number UAW 081M. The cyclist was transporting two young passengers when the truck, reportedly moving at high speed, lost control and rammed into them.

Police identified the deceased as 13-year-old Waigolo Phillip and 8-year-old Malinzi Purity, both of whom died on the spot due to the impact of the crash. The driver of the Isuzu truck fled the scene immediately and is currently on the run.

According to preliminary findings, the truck was travelling from Ikonia towards Nawampiti, while the cyclist was riding in the opposite direction. Investigators say the driver failed to control the vehicle as he approached Kasozi Village, resulting in the tragic collision.

The vehicle has since been parked pending inspection by the Inspector of Vehicles (IOV). The bodies of the two juveniles were conveyed to Kiyunga Health Centre IV mortuary for postmortem examination.

Busoga North Regional Police spokesperson SSP Samson Lubega said inquiries are underway to track down the driver and establish the exact cause of the accident. He extended condolences to the affected families and urged motorists to respect speed limits and exercise maximum caution, particularly in areas with vulnerable road users such as cyclists and pedestrians.
