JICA extends support to Mbale Hospital with new medical equipment, infrastructure support

Mbale City, Uganda: The Japan International Cooperation Agency (JICA) has extended new support to Mbale Regional Referral Hospital aimed at improving patient safety, strengthening service delivery, and enhancing the overall quality of healthcare in Eastern Uganda.

According to Inoue Yoichi, the Chief Representative of JICA Uganda Office, the intervention includes funding for modern medical equipment, renovation of key hospital infrastructure, technical assistance, and specialised patient safety training for healthcare workers.

He noted that similar support has already been extended to Soroti and Jinja Regional Referral Hospitals as part of JICA’s broader investment in health systems strengthening.

Yoichi said the assistance is intended to help regional hospitals improve clinical outcomes and efficiently manage the growing patient load. “Our commitment is to improve service delivery and ensure patients are cared for in a safer and more effective environment,” he said.

Program Officer for Infrastructure and the Private Sector at JICA Uganda Office explained that JICA implements development assistance on behalf of the Japanese government. He added that the agency has collaborated with the Government of Uganda for many years across priority development sectors, including agriculture, particularly rice promotion, economic infrastructure, health, water supply, and education.

Muhame further clarified that some projects financed by JICA are loans that the Government of Uganda will repay, while others are issued as grants depending on the nature and priority of the intervention.

The latest support to Mbale Regional Referral Hospital is expected to significantly improve service efficiency and strengthen the hospital’s capacity to deliver safe, quality healthcare to communities across the region.
