Soroti District, Uganda: Soroti University is in its final preparations for a historic milestone as the institution readies to hold its first graduation ceremony on Saturday, 13th December 2025, six years after admitting its pioneer cohort in 2019.

The science and technology–based public university, located in Arapai, will graduate 118 students across three flagship programmes, marking a major breakthrough for higher education in eastern Uganda.

According to university spokesperson Juma Hazan Yene, 53 students will graduate with Bachelor of Medicine and Bachelor of Surgery, 43 will complete Bachelor of Nursing Sciences, while 22 will graduate with Bachelor of Engineering in Computer and Electronic Engineering.

“This is a historic moment for Soroti University and the region. These graduates represent years of hard work, resilience and commitment to building a strong scientific workforce for the country,” Yene said.

The ceremony will be presided over by President Yoweri Kaguta Museveni, who is most likely to be represented by Vice President H.E. Rtd Maj Jessica Rose Alupo Epel due his ongoing campaign activities in Bunyoro subregion.

The day will also carry emotional significance as the university pays tribute to one of its pioneer medical students, the late Polycap Odukatum Okiror, who passed away in August this year.

Soroti University, established by the government in 2015 as Uganda’s ninth public university, was created to boost training in applied sciences, engineering, and health-related disciplines, particularly for eastern and northeastern Uganda.

Built on a “hands-on and minds-on” learning model, the university aims to become a regional hub for scientific innovation in line with Uganda’s Vision 2040.
