King’s College Budo wins big at World Math Convention in India

King’s College Budo students celebrate after touching down home with medals and team trophies won at the 2025 International Young Mathematicians Convention in Lucknow, India.

Lucknow, India: King’s College Budo (KCB) registered an outstanding debut at the 2025 International Young Mathematicians Convention (IYMC), winning medals, multiple team trophies, and cultural honours that firmly position the school among Africa’s rising giants in global mathematics competitions.

The biennial convention, hosted from November 3–6 at City Montessori School (CMS) in Lucknow, drew participants from across Africa, Europe, Asia and Australia, with India, its host, fielding the biggest contingent.

King’s College Budo sent a 17-member student team accompanied by five Mathematics Department teachers: Mrs Nabunya Margaret Kabuye, Mr Lubega James, Mr Walusimbi John, Mrs Nakiranda Grace Muwanguzi and delegation leader Mrs Assumpta Kasamba.

Despite being first-time entrants, the students delivered remarkable performances in both individual and team categories. Their medal haul included Otile Jensen (Junior) – Silver, Atamba Jayden (Junior) – Silver, Kizito Cleophas (Junior) – Silver, Kasiima Joshua (Senior) – Bronze, Kasirye Sira Nsibirwa (Junior) – Bronze and Namakula Skyler (Junior) – Bronze.

Competing under Uganda’s official national team name Team Nebula, KCB also secured several high-ranking team accolades, including First Runner-Up – Mathmania (Team contest), Second Runner-Up – Mathmania (Team contest), twice, Second Runner-Up – Crack the Code (Puzzle contest), Second Runner-Up – Junior Category (Overall), and “The Beloved Bunch” – Most Popular Team Award.

In the cultural arena, Team Nebula went on to dominate, emerging champions of the intercultural performance competition, a highlight that showcased Uganda’s artistic identity and earned the school a trophy for Best Cultural Presentation.

Head of the Mathematics Department Mr Lubega James praised the students’ discipline, resilience and innovation, and extended gratitude to Headmaster Canon John Fred Kazibwe for investing in international exposures that strengthen both academic excellence and university pathways.

Lubega noted that certificates earned at IYMC significantly enhance students’ prospects for competitive admissions abroad.
