Penalty drama hands Uganda CECAFA Boys schools title, Tanzania crowned Girls champions

Uganda’s boys’ team celebrates after defeating Ethiopia on penalties to win the CECAFA Schools Championship title at St Mary’s Stadium, Kitende.

Kitende, Uganda: Uganda and Tanzania were crowned champions of the 2025 CECAFA Qualifiers for the CAF African Schools Football Championship after tense penalty shoot-outs in both the boys’ and girls’ finals played on Tuesday at St Mary’s Stadium, Kitende.

Uganda claimed the boys’ crown after a tight final against Ethiopia that ended goalless before the hosts edged the shoot-out 3–1 to lift the regional trophy.

In the girls’ final, Tanzania also triumphed on penalties after a cagey 0–0 draw with Ethiopia, winning the shoot-out 5–4 to secure the title.

Earlier in the day, the third-place play-offs saw Tanzania beat Burundi 2–0 in the boys’ category, while Uganda defeated Burundi 2–0 to claim third place among the girls.

A series of individual and team accolades capped the tournament.

  1. Fair Play Awards: Burundi (boys), Uganda (girls)
  2. Best Goalkeepers: Ramadhan Ngendabanyikwa (Burundi, boys), Lukia Seleman (Tanzania, girls)
  3. Top Scorers: Nabiru Kajumba (Uganda, boys), Hajra Mawanja (Tanzania, girls)
  4. Best Players: Muhoozi Henry (Uganda, boys), Lydia Namaseruka (Uganda, girls)

Substantial prize money was awarded to top-performing teams.

  1. Bronze: Tanzania (boys) and Uganda (girls) – USD 50,000 each
  2. Silver: Ethiopia (boys and girls) – USD 75,000 each
  3. Gold: Uganda (boys) and Tanzania (girls) – USD 100,000 each

The championship marked the fourth edition of the CECAFA Schools qualifiers, bringing together young talent from across East and Central Africa in a high-energy showcase of skill, discipline and rising regional football potential.
