Bugiri, Uganda: Shock engulfed residents of Busowa Town Council after a deadly Wednesday morning crash in which a taxi heading from Tororo to Kampala rammed into a stationary trailer, killing at least ten people and leaving several others severely injured.
The fatal incident occurred near Busowa Police Station when the driver of a Toyota Hiace (UBN 817H) reportedly lost control and crashed into a parked trailer (UA 647BA). Local leaders said early assessments point to reckless driving and speeding as the primary cause.
Busowa Town Council Mayor Naminya Badiru described the scene as horrific. “The incident was terrible and at least ten people have lost their lives. Initial reports indicate reckless driving, and the taxi driver veered off the road and hit the trailer from the rear,” he said, urging motorists to avoid speeding and dangerous road behaviour.
Eyewitness Kisige Tifu, who spoke to DailyExpress, echoed the concerns, noting that festive seasons often come with spikes in fatal accidents. “Speeding caused this tragedy. Christmas periods are always marred with such incidents. Authorities must enforce the law seriously to prevent future crashes,” he warned.
Police confirmed the accident, with Busoga East Police Spokesperson ASP Michael Kasadha stating that ten people had died on the spot while three survivors were rushed to Bugiri General Hospital in critical condition.
“The accident occurred at around 6am when a Toyota Hiace veered off the road and knocked a stationary trailer parked on the roadside. Ten were confirmed dead and three are receiving medical care,” Kasadha said.
He urged all road users to maintain vigilance and discipline, especially during the festive period when crash numbers typically rise.
