Police reveal what caused nasty crash that killed at least ten passengers in Bugiri

Busoga East Police spokesperson ASP Michael Kasadha confirmed the tragedy, noting that preliminary findings point to reckless driving as the immediate cause.

Bugiri, Uganda: Police in Bugiri District have launched investigations into a fatal Wednesday morning crash that killed ten yet-to-be-identified passengers on the spot and left three others severely injured along the Iganga–Bugiri highway.

The deadly collision occurred today, 10 December 2025, at around 7:00 am in Busowa Town Council, involving a Toyota Hiace drone taxi (UBN 817H) and a stationary HOWO trailer (UA 647BA/UA 430AA) parked approximately seven metres off the main road.

Busoga East Police spokesperson ASP Michael Kasadha confirmed the tragedy, noting that preliminary findings point to reckless driving as the immediate cause.

“Preliminary findings indicate that a speeding Toyota Hiace taxi travelling from Malaba to Kampala was overtaking an unidentified vehicle. In the process, the driver attempted to dodge an oncoming vehicle before ramming into a trailer parked about seven metres from the road,” Kasadha said. “Ten passengers died instantly, and three others were severely injured.”

Traffic officers led by Regional Traffic Officer SP Kizire Nasir responded to the scene, ferrying the bodies to Bugiri Main Hospital mortuary. The injured were initially admitted to Bugiri Hospital before being transferred to Jinja Regional Referral Hospital for specialised care.

“The wreckage of the Toyota Hiace has been towed to CPS Bugiri pending IOV inspection,” Kasadha added in a Wednesday afternoon statement.

Police have assured the public of a full investigation to establish additional details surrounding the crash and have urged motorists to exercise strict discipline during the festive season.

“We appeal to motorists to adhere to safe driving practices to avoid deadly crashes, especially during this season. Most accidents result from human error,” Kasadha warned.

DailyExpress understands that the death toll could rise, with reports indicating that some occupants sustained extremely severe injuries.
