Three arrested, several injured as campaign rally turns violent in Adjumani

North West Nile Regional Police Spokesperson SP Asea Collins confirmed the report

Adjumani, Uganda: Police in Adjumani District have arrested three suspects after a campaign rally in Jurum East Village, Dzaipi Sub-County turned violent on Wednesday afternoon, leaving four people injured and several vehicles damaged.

According to North West Nile Regional Police Spokesperson SP Asea Collins, the clash occurred at around 1:00 PM when supporters of incumbent LCV Chairman Anyama Ben allegedly ambushed the campaign team of opposition candidate Anyanzo John Ambayo.

Police said Ambayo’s convoy first encountered a roadblock made of logs placed across the road by unknown individuals as they headed to an Electoral Commission-approved rally. After clearing the obstruction and proceeding to the venue, the team came under attack from stone-throwing individuals shortly after the rally commenced.

Four of Ambayo’s supporters were injured during the assault, while five campaign vehicles — registration numbers UA 566AZ, UA 356BE, UBF 098T, UBF 956F and UBG 918H — sustained broken windows and body damage.

SP Asea confirmed that Ambayo’s group overpowered and apprehended three suspected attackers before handing them over to police. The suspects are now detained at Adjumani Central Police Station on charges of malicious damage, assault occasioning actual bodily harm and related electoral offences under CRB 719/2025.

He added that injured victims have been issued Police Form 3 for medical examination, statements have been recorded, and all damaged vehicles have been documented as exhibits. SP Asea warned political actors against perpetrating violence, noting that investigations are ongoing and more arrests are expected.

The incident has heightened political tensions in Adjumani District ahead of the upcoming local government elections.
