Uganda first in Africa to launch ‘IP in a Box’ game lab for young innovators

URSB and WIPO officials launch the “IP in a Box” Game Lab in Kampala, making Uganda the first African country to adopt the interactive model.

Uganda Thursday launched the “IP in a Box” Game Lab, an interactive Play, Learn and Protect innovation model designed to equip young creators with the skills to develop, manage and safeguard their intellectual property.

The initiative positions Uganda as the first African country to roll out the programme, developed in partnership with the World Intellectual Property Organization (WIPO).

Registrar General of the Uganda Registration Services Bureau (URSB), Ms Mercy K. Kainobwisho, described the launch as a major milestone for the country’s innovators.

“Uganda becomes the first African country to launch the IP in a Box project, a milestone worth celebrating,” she said. “Young Ugandans are building brands from their phones. Now they’re learning how to protect them. Africa’s creativity is powerful. When protected, it becomes unstoppable.”

The ‘IP in a Box’ model uses gamified learning to introduce intellectual property concepts to youth, enabling them to understand trademarks, patents, copyrights and brand protection in a practical and engaging way.

Mr Robert Mugabe, Commissioner for Intellectual Property at URSB, emphasised the limitless potential of IP once creators understand its value.

“We call it #IPinaBox, but the truth is this: intellectual property can never fit in a box. The moment you open it, you realise how big and limitless the world of ideas really is,” he said.

URSB says the Game Lab will strengthen Uganda’s youth-led innovation ecosystem by fostering early awareness of IP rights, and also support Uganda’s broader objective of enhancing innovation readiness, building capacity among young inventors, and strengthening national competitiveness through IP-led creativity.
