Five cows stolen in midnight raid as festive season thieves strike

Butebo, Uganda: Police in Butebo District have arrested three suspects following a midnight livestock theft in which five cows were stolen and slaughtered in Kajule Village, Sukusuku Parish, Maizimasa Sub-County.

The incident occurred at around 1:00 am on December 13, 2025, when unknown assailants raided cattle kraals belonging to two residents before slaughtering the animals in a nearby garden along the Kabwangasi–Maizimasa road.

Retired police officer Muloni Mhalon, 67, lost two cows valued at Shs3.7 million. He discovered the theft after waking up for prayers and finding his kraal empty. His neighbour, peasant farmer Janguya Amos, 53, lost three cows worth approximately Shs5 million, a discovery made by his wife at about 6:00 am.

The matter was reported to the police under reference number KABWANGASI CRB 072/2025. The Butebo District Police Commander led officers to the scene, where a canine unit was deployed. According to police, the tracker dog followed scent trails from the slaughter site, leading to the arrest of three suspects.

Bukedi North Police Public Relations Officer ASP Wilfred Kyempasa confirmed the arrests, saying investigations are ongoing to establish the full circumstances surrounding the crime.

ASP Kyempasa warned residents to remain vigilant as the Christmas season approaches, noting that livestock theft typically spikes during festive periods. He urged the public to report suspicious activity promptly and cautioned against mob justice.

A resident, who requested anonymity, said the community is living in fear as thieves continue targeting livestock, which remains a key source of livelihood in the area.

He added that some of the stolen animals were acquired using funds from the Parish Development Model (PDM), frustrating beneficiaries who are yet to stabilise and benefit from the programme.

Police have not yet released details of the suspects’ identities or whether the slaughtered meat has been recovered as inquiries continue.
