Kagadi, Uganda: President Yoweri Kaguta Museveni’s campaign stop in Kagadi District gained fresh momentum after a senior figure from the National Unity Platform (NUP) withdrew from the parliamentary race and declared support for the ruling National Resistance Movement (NRM).
Speaking before the President at a rally held at Muhorro Playground, Speaker of Parliament and NRM Second National Vice Chairperson, Rt. Hon. Anita Annet Among announced that Buyaga East NUP flag bearer Brian Asingwire had officially stepped down and crossed to NRM after six years with the opposition party.
Among said Asingwire’s decision followed his assessment of government development programmes in Kagadi and the wider Bunyoro sub-region, describing the move as a sign of growing confidence in NRM’s leadership and delivery record.
Addressing the gathering, President Museveni said the NRM was founded on unity, peace and development, not sectarian politics based on tribe, religion or gender. He reminded residents that before colonialism, Ugandan communities thrived on skills and productivity, a philosophy the NRM has restored through stability, strong institutions and economic empowerment.

Museveni highlighted government achievements in infrastructure development, education and healthcare, as well as wealth creation through commercial agriculture. He reiterated the need for Ugandans to work for both “the stomach and the wallet,” citing successful farming models and industrialisation initiatives such as Mbale Industrial Park, which he said employs over 44,000 Ugandans.
The President pledged further government support to Kagadi District, including the establishment of a new skilling hub to bring vocational training closer to communities and the rehabilitation of the Ndaiga–Kagadi road.
He also raised concern over delays in the disbursement of coffee funds, assuring residents that the matter would be followed up for quick resolution.
Prime Minister Rt. Hon. Robinah Nabbanja told the rally that Kagadi leaders were now fully united behind President Museveni and pledged overwhelming electoral support for the NRM in the 2026 general elections. She also conveyed greetings from Kenyan President William Ruto, who wished Museveni a landslide victory.
Nabbanja urged NRM leaders and supporters to intensify grassroots mobilisation through door-to-door campaigns ahead of the polls.
Among further commended Museveni for safeguarding freedom of worship, investing in oil roads, supporting tea growers with Shs360 billion, constructing Hoima City Stadium and establishing a public university in Bunyoro, developments she said have transformed the region and attracted cross-party support.
She also announced that David Muhumuza, an Independent contestant for the Mwenge North parliamentary seat, had stepped down in favour of the NRM flag bearer.
