Nansana, Uganda: Police in Nansana have launched investigations into a Sudanese family accused of brutally assaulting their domestic worker, leading to her death, in an incident that has shocked residents of Nabweru South Cell 1.
The incident triggered tension in the area as police cordoned off the residence and blocked access to the scene. According to residents, the domestic worker was rushed to a nearby clinic after sustaining severe injuries, but was pronounced dead on arrival.
“They brought the girl with a very deep wound on her head, but she had already passed on,” a medical officer at the clinic said.
Police officers who responded to the scene restricted journalists from taking photographs as detectives began preliminary inquiries. Inside the house, officers detained the housewife to assist with investigations amid allegations that the victim’s body had been removed from the residence before police arrived.
Residents further reported suspicious activity at the home shortly before police intervention. One resident said items were hurriedly removed from the house and wrapped in sacks, raising alarm in the neighbourhood.
“We saw them taking things out of the home wrapped in sacks, and we started wondering what was going on,” the resident said. “Later, we discovered that the worker had been beaten and had died.”
The Local Defence Unit (LDU) officer for Nabweru South Cell 1, Denis Ssekatawa, described the incident as disturbing and appealed to the public to cooperate with security agencies as investigations continue.
Kampala Metropolitan Police Spokesperson, Ms Racheal Kawala, confirmed the ongoing probe, saying multiple individuals have been taken in to help establish the circumstances surrounding the death.
“We have begun inquiries into the circumstances surrounding the death of the worker,” Kawala said. “Several people, including the medical officer, have been taken in to assist with the investigation.”
Police said suspects will remain in custody as detectives piece together the events, including verifying reports that the victim sustained a severe head injury prior to her death.
