Kiryandongo District, Uganda: Kiryandongo District authorities have launched a series of government-funded health infrastructure projects aimed at improving service delivery, strengthening medical waste management and enhancing patient care across public health facilities in the district.
The district has commenced construction of modern combustion chambers at Karuma Health Centre II, Kiroko Health Centre II and Diima Health Centre III to ensure safe and effective disposal of medical waste. The projects, valued at Shs190 million, are funded under the Government of Uganda’s Primary Health Care (PHC) grant.
Similar combustion chambers at Kichwabugingo Health Centre II and Apodorwa Health Centre II have already been completed, commissioned and officially handed over for use.
To improve patient dignity and gender-inclusive service delivery, district leaders also launched the partitioning of the surgical ward at Kiryandongo General Hospital, an upgrade intended to enhance privacy and overall quality of care.
Additional interventions include the installation of prepaid electricity meters at staff quarters at Kiryandongo General Hospital to regulate power consumption and reduce operational costs, as well as the launch of solar power installation at Karuma Health Centre II to ensure reliable energy supply for uninterrupted health services.
District officials said the infrastructure upgrades are expected to improve working conditions for health workers and enhance healthcare outcomes for residents across Kiryandongo District, particularly at lower-level health facilities.
