Kampala, Uganda: The Opposition National Unity Platform (NUP) presidential candidate Robert Kyagulanyi Ssentamu (Bobi Wine) on Monday paid a courtesy visit to the Katikkiro of Buganda, Owek. Charles Peter Mayiga, at Bulange Mengo, ahead of his scheduled campaign activities in Lubaga Division.
During the meeting, Kyagulanyi said NUP holds deep respect for culture, noting that in Buganda, cultural values are embodied in the institution of the Kabaka.
“We send our good wishes to the Kabaka and want him to know that we love our culture,” Kyagulanyi said. “There are politicians who try to divide our people and sow discord among Baganda. As NUP, we want the Kabaka to know that we are ready to continue protecting the dignity of our people.”

Kyagulanyi also commended the Katikkiro for speaking out against human rights violations, despite what he described as personal risks.
“We thank you for always standing up against violence meted out on our people, even when it comes with challenges,” Kyagulanyi said, adding that NUP’s mobilisation efforts across Buganda and the rest of the country have been largely peaceful and well received.
In response, Katikkiro Charles Peter Mayiga thanked Kyagulanyi for what he described as consistent loyalty to Buganda, stressing that the Kingdom welcomes all leaders regardless of political affiliation.
“Bulange is like Lubaga Cathedral or Namirembe Cathedral or Kibuli Mosque. Everyone comes here regardless of tribe or political party,” Mayiga said. “Buganda is the foundation upon which Uganda is built, and we welcome all who respect our culture and the Kabaka.”

Mayiga outlined Buganda’s five core aspirations: respect for the Kabaka and his officials, federalism, protection of land and Buganda’s boundaries, poverty eradication, and unity among Baganda.
“These are the values I ask you to stand for. Any politician who respects them will win the hearts of Buganda,” the Katikkiro said.
He also cautioned NUP supporters against misuse of social media, urging respectful engagement even in disagreement. “You can disagree without abusing people or their families. We must guide the youth to be responsible because our future lies with them,” Mayiga said.

The Katikkiro further called on the government to rein in security agencies to ensure a violence-free electoral process, amid reports of clashes between security forces and Kyagulanyi’s supporters during recent campaign activities.
