Police hunt key suspect in Butaleja power vandalism racket

Butaleja, Uganda: Territorial Police in eastern Uganda’s Butaleja District have launched investigations into a suspected racket behind the vandalism of electricity infrastructure in Bufujja Town Council.

According to a police statement issued Monday morning, the incident was reported on December 14, 2025, at about 7:00 am, after the Chairperson of Lubanga Cell received information from residents that unknown individuals had vandalised electric wires from power poles.

The matter was reported to Bufujja Police Station, prompting the Officer in Charge (OC) Bufujja to request support from the Police K9 Unit.

A police sniffer dog, K9 Vegas, was deployed to the scene and successfully picked a human scent, leading officers to a semi-permanent house belonging to Esero Fred, located approximately 500 metres from the crime scene.

The suspect was not found at home at the time of the operation, and police say efforts to trace and arrest him are ongoing.

A search conducted at the premises led to the recovery of stolen electric cable wires and other electronic items believed to be linked to the vandalism.
