Rukiga, Uganda: Three people were killed and four others injured in a fatal road accident involving a Trinity Kampala-bound bus, registration number RAT 597K, along the Ntungamo–Kabale highway in Rukiga District.

The crash occurred at about 2:30 am on Monday in Kakatunda Village, Muhanga Town Council, when the bus reportedly veered off the road and slid into a water-filled trench.

According to survivor Erice Byamungu, the bus suddenly lost control, with suspicion that the driver may have fallen asleep at the wheel.

The Kigezi Regional Police Spokesperson, ASP Elly Maate, identified the deceased as John Herbert Lubwama, 26, a resident of Kanyanya Village in Kawempe Division, Kampala District; Alfres Habineza, 30, the bus conductor; and another victim identified only as Gaddafi. Police said Habineza and Gaddafi were Rwandan nationals.

Maate said the injured include the bus driver, Ananias Habiyaremye, 44, a resident of Rwamagana District in Rwanda, and three adult female passengers whose identities had not yet been established by press time.

He explained that the driver lost control of the bus on a slope, causing it to plunge into a shallow trench before sliding into a deeper section filled with water.

“As the bus slid, the door broke off, forcing passengers to attempt escape. In the process, three people were crushed to death while four others sustained injuries,” Maate said.

The injured were rushed to Kabale Regional Referral Hospital for treatment, while the bodies of the deceased were conveyed to the same facility’s mortuary for postmortem examinations.

Police said preliminary investigations point to over-speeding on a slope as the likely cause of the accident.
