‘No Place for Chaos’ – Museveni issues stark warning ahead of 2026 polls

President Yoweri Museveni meets former NUP parliamentary candidates at State Lodge Nakasero after their defection to NRM.

Kampala, Uganda: The ruling National Resistance Movement (NRM) Presidential candidate, H.E. Yoweri Kaguta Museveni, has warned that government will not tolerate any attempts to destabilise Uganda, declaring that “there is no place for chaos” in the country.

The President made the remarks on Sunday, December 14, 2025, while receiving National Unity Platform (NUP) parliamentary candidates who crossed to the ruling party during a meeting at State Lodge Nakasero.

Those who defected to NRM include Ojangole Anthony, MP aspirant for Agule County and former NUP Chairperson for Pallisa, and Godfrey Kateu, MP aspirant for Pallisa County and former NUP Secretary General for Pallisa District.

Mr Museveni welcomed the new entrants, describing their decision as foresighted and in the national interest, saying they had “seen the light.” He assured Ugandans that the 2026 general elections will be free and fair, but issued a stern warning against political violence, particularly involving youths.

“Some youth in the opposition have gone ahead to form gangs known as egaali to cause chaos. We shall crush those gangs,” Museveni warned.

He cautioned political actors against mobilising supporters for violence, urging them instead to focus on peaceful voter mobilisation. “People should mobilise voters peacefully, not incite them to engage in violence,” the President said.

Museveni also commended Deputy Speaker of Parliament, Rt. Hon. Thomas Tayebwa and Special Presidential Assistant–Press and Mobilisation, Haji Faruk Kirunda, for spreading the NRM ideology across the country.

On his part, Haji Kirunda told the President that more opposition figures are preparing to defect to NRM, citing confidence in the party’s ideology and leadership.

Speaking on behalf of the defectors, Ojangole Anthony admitted that opposition leaders had been mobilising supporters to cause unrest during elections. “Our leaders were telling us to cause chaos and bloodshed during elections, but after reflection, we rejected that path. NRM has built this country for 40 years,” Ojangole said.

He urged those seeking power to do so lawfully through peaceful and democratic means.

The meeting was attended by Rt. Hon. Thomas Tayebwa, Pallisa RDC, Majid Dhikusooka, Pallisa District NRM Chairperson, Derrick Orone, NRM flag bearer for Pallisa County, Ibrahim Ibrahim Aisu, among other party leaders.
