Namisindwa, Uganda: Police in Namisindwa District have released several senior National Resistance Movement (NRM) officials on bond as investigations intensify into the alleged mismanagement of party mobilisation funds meant for grassroots activities.
By Thursday morning, at least six senior NRM officials had been detained at Namisindwa Central Police Station (CPS). Those involved include District NRM Vice Chairperson Charles Nasimolo, Finance Secretary Cyrus Kimaku, General Secretary Peter Mukisa, Bupoto Sub-county Chairperson Peter Wakayiya, and Namisindwa Town Council Chairperson Sharif Nakhabala.
Security agencies are still pursuing NRM chairpersons from Mukhuyu Sub-county, Lwakhakha Town Council and Bumbo Sub-county in connection with the same probe.
Speaking to journalists, the Deputy Regional Head for Bugisu in charge of NRM grassroots mobilisation parish conferences, Ambassador Simon Mulongo, said investigations will proceed without fear or favour, stressing that mobilisation funds must reach their intended beneficiaries.
“These are transport refund funds meant to facilitate mobilisation. No one involved will be spared, but party flag bearers should not be blamed because their role is limited to canvassing for votes,” Mulongo said.
Namisindwa Resident District Commissioner (RDC) Elijah Madoi confirmed that millions of shillings have already been recovered and sanctioned for redistribution to affected areas.
“The recovered funds have been cleared for Bupoto Sub-county, Namisindwa Town Council and Namabya. Efforts are ongoing to recover the balance for Lwakhakha Town Council, Bumbo Sub-county and Mukhuyu Sub-county,” Madoi said.
NRM district official Aramazan Wabuko disclosed that Shs31 million has so far been recovered out of the Shs58 million under investigation, adding that efforts are ongoing to recover the remaining balance. He urged party leaders to remain honest and mobilise for all NRM flag bearers from the presidency to LC1 level.
