Namayingo, Uganda: A 38-year-old Electoral Commission (EC) staff member attached to the Namayingo District EC office has died following a fatal road accident that occurred on Christmas morning along the Namayingo–Musita road.
The deceased has been identified as Nicholas Ochieng, an Electoral Commission supervisor and resident of Mpano B Cell, Bulamba Ward, Namayingo Town Council, who was travelling from Namayingo to Mayuge at the time of the crash.
According to police, the accident occurred at Walumbe Cell, Nambugu Ward, within Namayingo Town Council and involved two motor vehicles and a motorcycle on which the deceased was riding.
Busoga East Police Spokesperson ASP Michael Kasadha said the crash involved a Toyota Hiace (registration number UBA 289H), a Toyota Harrier (registration number UA 129CE), and an unidentified motorcycle.
Ochieng reportedly sustained a compound fracture and was rushed to Shalom Medical Centre, where he was later pronounced dead.
“The accident involved a motor vehicle UBA 289H Toyota Hiace, a Toyota Harrier registration number UA 129CE, and an unknown motorcycle. The drivers and the rider were not yet identified and are currently on the run,” ASP Kasadha said in a statement issued on Thursday.
Preliminary police findings point to reckless riding by the motorcyclist, who was travelling from Namayingo Town towards Mayuge. Police indicated that the rider, who was reportedly speeding, attempted to avoid a collision with a Toyota Harrier that was joining the main road.
“The motorcycle avoided collision with the Toyota Harrier, lost control, veered into the right-hand lane, and collided head-on with the Toyota Hiace coming from the opposite direction,” Kasadha explained.
Traffic police officers visited and documented the scene before towing the two motor vehicles to the police station for inspection. By press time, the motorcycle involved had not yet been recovered.
Police have since launched a manhunt for the motorcyclist and the drivers of the two vehicles to aid ongoing investigations aimed at establishing the full circumstances surrounding the crash.
Authorities have renewed calls for motorists and riders to exercise caution on the roads, especially during the festive season, which often records a spike in traffic accidents linked to speeding and reckless driving.
