Kamuli, Uganda: A total of 15 babies were born on Christmas Day in Kamuli and Bugiri districts, bringing joy to families and health workers across the two eastern Uganda districts.
At Kamuli General Hospital and Kamuli Mission Hospital, eight babies were delivered—five boys and three girls—with four births conducted through caesarean section.
The youngest mother, aged 16, delivered normally, although her baby was admitted to the Neonatal Unit at Kamuli Mission Hospital after showing signs of exhaustion.
Kamuli Assistant District Health Officer in charge of Maternal and Child Health, Moses Lyagoba, said health facilities had increased standby staff to manage Christmas deliveries.
“We scaled up maternal standby teams to ensure no mother or child faced complications. The caesarean sections were handled efficiently and all deliveries were successful,” Lyagoba said.
In Bugiri District, seven male babies were delivered at Bugiri General Hospital.
Among the mothers was Jackline Namukose, a resident of Gayaza, Kampala, who had travelled to Busanzi to visit her parents. She went into labour on Christmas Eve at about 4pm.
“As an Adventist, I will name my baby Emanuel, meaning ‘God with us’. I am very happy to give birth on the same day Jesus was born,” Namukose said.
Another mother, Auma Angella from Bululu Village in Muterere Sub-county, said she would name her baby Praise.
“I thank God. I did not expect to find health workers on duty during Christmas, but I delivered safely without complications,” she said.
Bugiri Hospital midwife Peristus Nasirumbi revealed that five of the seven mothers who delivered later left the facility at night after childbirth. She added that more than 10 midwives were on standby, ensuring safe deliveries for both mothers and babies.
