25 babies born at Iganga Hospital on Christmas Day

A mother at Iganga General Hospital attend to her newborn after the facility registered 25 safe deliveries on Christmas Day.

Iganga, Uganda: Mothers delivering at Iganga General Hospital have praised the quality of maternal healthcare after the facility registered 25 births on Christmas Day, with hospital officials describing the outcome as safe and complication-free.

Hospital records show that 14 baby girls and 11 baby boys were born on December 25, 2025. Of the total deliveries, 20 were normal births, while five were successful caesarean sections, according to hospital management.

The In-Charge of the Maternity Ward, Asuman Mulunda, commended both the medical staff and mothers for choosing facility-based deliveries, saying this significantly reduces maternal and neonatal risks.

“We thank God for these lives,” Dr Mulunda said. “Delivering from a health facility gives mothers access to skilled care, which helps prevent complications such as excessive bleeding that often lead to maternal deaths.”

He cautioned against deliveries conducted by traditional birth attendants, noting that they remain a major contributor to preventable maternal fatalities.

“Many deaths occur because women give birth outside health facilities,” he said. “We encourage expectant mothers to always seek professional medical services.”

Hospital officials confirmed that most mothers who delivered normally were discharged the same day and returned home to celebrate Christmas with their families. All babies were reported to be in stable condition, with none requiring admission to the Neonatal Unit.

One of the mothers, Nairuba Brenda, who delivered a baby boy, said she was satisfied with the care she received from the maternity team.

“This is my second child delivered from this hospital,” Nairuba told DailyExpress. “The midwives were very supportive and professional. I encourage other expectant mothers to come here because the care is good, despite what people sometimes say.”

Hospital authorities say the Christmas Day births reflect growing confidence in public health facilities as efforts continue to improve maternal and child healthcare across the district.
