Lwengo, Uganda: At least seven members of the same family have perished in a fatal road traffic accident that occurred in the early hours of Saturday, December 27, 2025, along the Masaka–Mbarara Highway in Lwengo District, traffic police have confirmed.

According to Traffic Police Spokesperson SP Michael Kananura, the fatal crash happened at around 4:30am at Njagalakasayi, involving a Fuso Fighter truck (registration UBP 510V) and a Toyota Fielder (registration UBH 476W).

Preliminary investigations indicate that the driver of the Toyota Fielder, who was travelling from the Masaka side, attempted to overtake a queue of vehicles before colliding head-on with the oncoming Fuso truck.

“All seven occupants of the Toyota Fielder died on the spot,” Kananura said.

Police identified the victims as a man, his wife, their four children, and the man’s brother, all of whom were travelling in the same vehicle at the time of the crash.

Kananura added that investigations into the incident are ongoing as authorities continue to reconstruct the circumstances surrounding the collision.

In the wake of the tragedy, police have renewed calls for road users to exercise caution, particularly during night travel.

“We urge all motorists to avoid reckless overtaking, especially at night when visibility is poor,” Kananura said, further advising drivers to limit night travel where possible and ensure they are well-rested to reduce fatigue-related crashes.

The accident adds to a growing list of fatal road incidents recorded during the festive season, a period often marked by increased traffic volumes, speeding, and risky driving behaviour.
