Buyende, Uganda: Violence erupted in Buyende District after supporters of disqualified Budiope East parliamentary aspirant, Da Mulirire, clashed with those backing incumbent Eng Hon Magogo Moses, following the former’s removal from the parliamentary race at the latter’s advantage.

The clashes broke out on December 26, 2025, at Miru Trading Centre in Kaguru Sub-County, shortly after news of the disqualification filtered through the community, triggering anger and retaliation among rival camps.

Police said confrontations between supporters quickly escalated into violence, spreading from Miru Trading Centre to Kasokoso and Bumpanga villages, where improvised shrines were torched and several people sustained injuries. On December 27, further retaliatory attacks were reported, forcing some residents to flee their homes.

Busoga North Police spokesperson Samson Lubega said the unrest was directly linked to tensions arising from the disqualification, which left Magogo as the sole candidate in the race.

“During the clashes, supporters from both sides engaged in violent acts at Miru Trading Centre and extended to Kasokoso and Bumpanga villages, where improvised shrines were burnt and several individuals sustained injuries. On 27th December 2025, retaliatory attacks were reported, leading to the displacement of residents within the affected areas,” SSP Lubega said.

In response, police deployed additional security personnel, including the FFU Zonal Commander and the Buyende District Police Commander, to quell the violence and restore order.

Police operations led to the recording of statements from victims, the arrest of three suspects to assist with investigations, and the intensification of both motorised and foot patrols across the affected areas. Community policing and sensitisation efforts were also activated to calm tensions.

“As a result of the operations: Statements have been recorded from victims, three (03) suspects have been arrested to assist with investigations, and motorized and foot patrols have been intensified,” SSP Lubega emphasized.

Police said the situation in the affected parts of Buyende is currently calm, with security deployments remaining in place to prevent further violence.

“The Police calls upon members of the public to remain calm, avoid acts of violence, and resolve political disagreements through lawful means. Police will continue to monitor the situation closely, support community policing efforts, and ensure that all suspects involved are subjected to the due process of the law,” he concluded.
