Kampala, Uganda: The Mufti of Uganda, Sheikh Shaban Ramadhan Mubajje, has assured the Uganda Peoples’ Defence Forces that the Muslim community under the Uganda Muslim Supreme Council will not participate in any protest vote ahead of the January 15, 2025 national elections, pledging commitment to peace and stability.

Mubajje made the assurance during a courtesy visit by senior UPDF officers led by Henry Masiko, the UPDF Chief Political Commissar. The meeting took place over the weekend at the UMSC headquarters in Old Kampala.

“I am absolutely certain that no Muslim in Uganda, especially those under UMSC, will take part in the protest vote. We are fully committed to maintaining peace and stability in the country,” Mufti Mubajje said.

Maj. Gen. Masiko said the visit was part of the UPDF’s nationwide engagements aimed at fostering calm and unity as the country approaches the polls. He praised the Mufti’s leadership and the role of religious institutions in guiding communities during sensitive political periods.

“We are aware of the influence religious leaders have on the community. Your leadership in promoting harmony will be key to ensuring calm before and after the elections,” Masiko said.

The UPDF delegation also included Samuel Kawagga and Abdurahman Rugumayo, with discussions centring on national unity, peaceful participation in the electoral process, and the army’s readiness to provide a secure environment for all Ugandans to vote.

Reflecting on the history and mandate of UMSC, Mufti Mubajje reaffirmed the council’s role in peacebuilding and civic responsibility. He highlighted the contribution of the Inter-Religious Council of Uganda, which brings together mainstream religious institutions to promote unity, dialogue, and cooperation.

He concluded by reiterating UMSC’s readiness to work with government, security agencies, and other faith leaders to ensure peaceful, free, and orderly elections.

“Let us all work together for a peaceful and orderly election process,” Mufti Mubajje said.

The engagement underscored continued coordination between religious leaders and security agencies as Uganda heads into the final stretch before the 2025 polls.
