Police tighten security in Busoga ahead of New Year crossover

Police have urged residents to remain vigilant and celebrate responsibly as the region ushers in 2026, warning against drink-driving, negligence, illegal fireworks, and other festive season crimes.

Busoga East, Uganda: The Territorial Police in Busoga East have called on residents to remain vigilant and celebrate responsibly as the region transitions from 2025 into the New Year 2026, warning against lawlessness, negligence, and unsafe festivities.

The appeal was issued by the regional police spokesperson, Micheal Kasadha, in an end-of-year message to the public, stressing that security deployments have been heightened to guarantee a safe crossover into 2026.

“As the new year approaches with excitement and jubilation, the public is implored to celebrate responsibly and with vigilance. As security, we are on ground overtly and covertly to ensure safety as we usher into the new year,” ASP Kasadha said.

Police urged organisers of New Year events, including overnight prayers and entertainment gatherings, to ensure adequate security arrangements and crowd control measures. Members of the public attending such events were advised to arrive early and avoid unnecessary movement outside venues, particularly late at night.

Kasadha warned that previous end-of-year celebrations have, at times, resulted in loss of life due to negligence, especially involving children left unattended by parents or guardians, as well as increased theft targeting homes left unoccupied.

“Leaving children and homes unattended poses a danger to both the children and the property,” he cautioned.

Police further warned road users against drink-driving, describing it as one of the leading causes of fatal crashes during festive seasons.

On fireworks, Kasadha emphasized that blasting and display are strictly restricted to individuals or entities authorised by the Inspector General of Police and coordinated through respective territorial police commands.

He also cautioned the public against burning tyres during celebrations, noting that the practice destroys road infrastructure and endangers lives, adding that police will apprehend and prosecute anyone found engaging in criminal activity.
